Dave Grohl. The man who gave us the Foo Fighters and played Drums for Nirvana before that has now given us a piece of his mind giving us a Solo Project involving 23 minutes of instrumental music, What more could you ask for?
So what is the project all about?
So Dave Grohl announced that he would be doing a 2 part Documentary that culminates with him performing a new solo 23-minute song on seven different instruments. It started to showcase “the rewards and challenges of dedicating ones life to playing and mastering a musical instrument.”
As quoted by Rolling Stone’s website:
“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out,”
“And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”
Grohl recruited Sonic Highways collaborator Mark Monroe to help mix the play track and performed the entire 23- minute instrumental on one instrument at a time and then merged all the videos together to create a seven-piece one man band which in my eyes is amazing a seven piece Dave Grohl band!
In a video that accompanied Play‘s impending arrival, Grohl previewed how the work, filmed by Brandon Trost, was constructed. First part of the Play documentary focuses on the behind-the-scenes preparation for the performance, which is unveiled in the second part.
My views on the song?
Well my views on the song are great I love anything Dave Grohl puts his hands on as it always becomes good music or interesting music at least but I’ve always been a big fan of the Foo’s as two of my previous blog posts are on the Foo’s (Concrete and Gold and Run Single)
So hearing about the solo project Dave was doing made me keep an eye out for it plus it’s something different other musicians do other projects where they work with other people but Dave Grohl went one better and work on his own knowing their wouldn’t be conflicts unless it was with himself but there wouldn’t be any drawbacks and all the creative ideas would be his own.
Also the Documentary was good I like how Dave included Kids who are learning to play and got their stories in to why there learning to play instruments or are in bands which is a nice touch.
The music is great it’s full of drums, guitar and bass but also includes instruments that Dave that use to as well giving it that creative side and its own personality.
Out of Five?
Well I’ve enjoyed this song and the documentary for this and it’s something different from the front man of the Foo’s and it also showed how he likes to get the track down, how to perform it and what it sounds like.
With that being said I’m giving this 3/5 Stars!
A good instrumental from the front man as well as the Documentary and I’ll be looking forward to seeing future releases from Mr. Grohl and the Foo Fighters very soon.
