Back in 1999, I was nine and the Pokemon world was becoming more popular than ever, the UK were loving their Millionaire TV game shows, The Blair Witch Project came out and so did this game, that’s right for this throwback I’m looking at Rollercoaster Tycoon.
What is Rollercoaster Tycoon?
Well for those who have never played these games Rollercoaster Tycoon is a simulation video game about building and managing an amusement park, within the game there are challenges players can do with open-ended amusement park management and development, and allowing players to construct and customize their own unique roller coasters and other thrill rides.
The game was created by Scottish programmer Chris Sawyer who is known for Transport Tycoon and Dino Dini’s Soccer and was published by Hasbro Interactive after the game has been out for a year three expansions came out which expanded the game giving the players more rides, parks and attractions to have in their parks.
So not including the Expansion packs, there are 21 Scenarios included in this game and successfully completing a scenario will unlock the next one for you to conquer and Some scenarios are based on real parks. For example, ‘Katie’s Dreamland’ is based on Lightwater Valley, complete with that park’s signature The Ultimate roller coaster (The Storm).
According to PC Data, it was the third best-selling PC game in 1999 and for sales in the United States totalled 719,535 units that year equalling revenues of $19.6 million—the third-highest gross for 1999.
Out of Five?
This game was fun and creative at the time and came out a year before the most popular PC game of all time (The Sims) but there were a lot of games to complete with and looking back at them they were the same genre of game, Simulation it’s a shame that these games phasing out with the technology we have and the games we can make today but this game will always be a classic and think it’s time they made Rollercoaster Tycoon 4.
