John Mayer – Continuum

What’s up Warriors and today with John Mayer recently announcing an upcoming tour with no support acts, I’m going to be looking at John Mayer’s 2006 album Continuum.

Released in September of 2006 and recorded in may locations including LA, New York and Memphis this album debuted at number 2 in the billboard when released and has gone on to sell 5 million copies worldwide.

Pretty Impressive for a Musician that is described as a Blues Rock, Pop Rock artist, but lets deluge in the album and give this my views and thoughts on the album.

12 tracks to go through so make sure you have a Cup of tea ready to drink along with the reading.

  1. Waiting On the World to Change  –  This song kickstarts the album with a slow drumbeat and mellow piano in the background of Mayer’s voice and iconic guitar playing but also has a little message which I believe is the corruption among leaders. This also is the first single off the album as well as the music video made for the album (Link Below)
  2. I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You) – Another slow song within the album but so calm and relaxing to listen to especially with Mayer’s guitar playing and the message from this song is Mayer warning a love interest about the danger of having her heartbroken, given his temperamental and unpredictable ways.
  3. Belief – So lyrically, the song details the pitfalls and dangers of belief and conviction and this song is a little more upbeat to the other two songs and even includes a crunchy guitar solo with a little gain on the clean tone giving it that little edge from the rest of the song.
  4. Gravity – This is one of my favourites on the album and I think this is one of the first songs I heard of John Mayer’s as well, and John Mayer has even been quoted saying that “This is the most important song I’ve ever written, it’s a time capsule song” This song is probably the most relaxing song on the album with a simple and repetitive Hi-hat and snare drum beat and one of Mayer’s Noodling riffs to go along with it Surprised this didn’t have a music video but then again this is the second time he has recorded it.
  5. The Heart of Life – It’s an acoustic track, not unlike “Stop This Train” which we will talk of later, in which Mayer defends life against all of the terrible things it brings on this song basically just features Mayer and his guitar but the style he has played it in this song gives me a little Santana vibe which is quite nice to listen to.
  6. Vultures – Once again this song has been recorded like this and Gravity have been featured on a live album called Try! but this song in my mind this is saying, Some of us are just going through life without achieving anything substantial. But nice vocals and guitar playing.
  7. Stop This Train – Another Favourite song of mine on the album this Acoustic song along with his voice is so relaxing and chilled to listen to and I’ve even recommended this song to people who haven’t listened to Mayer before. The song is about coming to terms with the unstoppable march of time, as well as mortality.
  8. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room –  This song is the Ballard of the album and is my personal Favourite out of all the songs so much so I’ve even tried learning this on guitar and playing it horrible compared to Mayer but this song has everything you need in a song in my eyes and there are two ways to look at this song, the Burning room being a symbol of their relationship, communicates the chaos and destruction of their current state. And the Slow dancing is a symbol of both their complacency and their initial love.
  9. Bold As Love (Jimi Hendrix Cover) – A cover of this awesome track of Jimi Hendrix’s and John Mayer doesn’t ruin or kill it and gives it his own spin but sounds the exact same but with Mayer’s Tone on the guitar.
  10. Dreaming With a Broken Heart – Classic Piano intro to this song tells you this is going to be a sad Ballard especially with the song title, but it’s a song you want to listen too with strong vocals and meaningful lyrics it’s not one to skip and even includes a little guitar solo halfway through.
  11. In Repair – The song is about emotional recovery, making reference to the “shadows” and “corners” of a restless mind that prevent Mayer from being his usual self. Being the longest song on the album I have mixed feelings about this song its a good song but not one of my favourites.
  12. I’m Gonna Find Another You –  The last song on the album and an ace song to end the album on, the song details Mayer’s plan to overcome his ex-girlfriend by finding somebody with whom he feels equally as connected. This song is a classic Bluesy style song which I love and you can see that it’s influenced by Blues music.

Overall?

This album is pretty impressive I heard one or two songs of Mayer’s before I checked out his music catalogue but what got me to check him out more was him performing with Frank Ocean on Pyramids (Link Here) but after checking his songs out this album is really good this is a album I would recommend with Noise Cancelling headphones go sit in a corner and absorb the music, great sound, great flow, powerful guitar playing and this a great album.

4/5 Stars!
